Jimmy B. Parker Scholarship Recipient

The Utah Genealogical Association is pleased to announce that Emily Alley is the recipient of the Jimmy B. Parker Scholarship award for SLIG 2022. This scholarship is awarded to the applicant who successfully demonstrates the spirit of service and giving back to the genealogical community as exemplified by Jimmy B. Parker. She will be attending SLIG Academy Course 2: You’re Invited: Public Speaking from Concept to Delivery. Congratulations Emily!

Emily Alley is a genealogist, author, and lecturer of US, British, and Irish genealogy. She received her BA in Family History from BYU and her MA in English Local History from the University of Leicester (with distinction), researching military widows of the English Civil War. She was the host of the BYUtv show Questions and Ancestors and has worked for Ancestry, FamilySearch, NEHGS, and Price Genealogy. She currently conducts private client research and teaches the British and Irish online genealogy classes for BYU-Idaho. In addition to family history, she enjoys gardening and traveling with her 12-year old son.

Our Midwest ancestors often originated from state-land states in the South and East Coast. Land records are vastly different there. The Smoking Bullet: Military Pension Records – Revolution through Civil War 
The term "smoking gun” is a metaphor for an object that serves as conclusive evidence. Rarely in genealogy do we find a single document or file that lists an ancestor’s birth, marriage, and death, but that is exactly what we may find in military pension records. Full session description here.

It’s What They Answered To: Understanding Ashkenazi Jewish Names
Name changes, both in adopted countries and in the old world, make determining Ashkenazic (central and eastern European) Jewish names a genealogical puzzle. One cannot take research back to the old country until one has identified forenames and last names. Searching for ancestors in Canada or Latin America? Struggling to find your Native American tribal origins or locate your African American ancestors after slavery?  Our instructors will provide valuable tips, erase misconceptions, and explain technical terms helping to make your search more productive.




Track Presentations

The following sessions run on Saturday, September 18th:

Finding your Ancestral Roots in Canada with Jacqueline Kanyuck, AG: Are you trying to research in Canada? This class will introduce a brief history of Canada and its provinces, show key records for research, and teach how to find these records from your home as you begin your ancestral hunt.

Native American Tribal Genealogy with Rick Fogarty: Native American genealogy has a complex history that stems from many misconceptions about the records, why and how they were created, and what information can be found. With over 500 tribes in the United States, it is difficult to use the same research approach for all tribes. This presentation will help to highlight the contrasts and comparisons in the research of different tribes and provide practical research approaches to aid genealogists of all skill levels. 

Researching African American Ancestors Who Came Out Of Slavery with LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, CGL:  The universal application of relevant genealogy standards will be illustrated in the context of sources and strategies relevant to enslaved African-American ancestors.

Pedigree Triangulation: A Key Methodology for Genetic Genealogy with Diana Elder, AG: Learn the power of pedigree triangulation in analyzing DNA matches and building your genetic family tree.

DNA Testing Plans with Paul Woodbury, MEdEven after taking a DNA test have you struggled to make progress on a persistent brick wall? Consider inviting others to test to help you answer your research questions. Learn how to leverage multiple types of DNA tests, prioritize DNA testing candidates, and harness the power of DNA to break down your research challenges.

A Guide To Third-Party Tools for DNA Testing with Michelle LeonardThis presentation will provide an overview of the major and minor third-party tools currently available that can be employed as aids to using DNA testing for genealogical purposes. Tune in for a plethora of practical hints and tips on how to get the most out of these useful tools.

Into the Unknown: Methodologies for Adoption, Unknown Parentage, and Misattributed Parentage with Paul Woodbury, MEd: Genetic genealogy methodologies are ideal not only for overcoming challenging historic brickwalls but also for overcoming more recent obstacles in your family history. In this session, learn about some of the key methodologies, approaches, and considerations for exploring cases of adoption, unknown parentage, and misattributed parentage.

Ethical Considerations: Using DNA for Genealogy with Melinda Henningfield, CG, CGL: After considering various ethical pitfalls in using DNA for genealogy, guidance for making ethical choices will be presented.
