She attended Salt Lake Community
College and earned certificates in both U.S. Genealogy Research and Writing, and
International Genealogy Research and Writing.
As a single young woman, she attended Brigham Young University, 1979-1982,
where she met her husband of nearly 42 years. They have six daughters and twelve
grandchildren.
At the age of thirty-six, she found my birth mother. The next year she found my birth
father. From that point on she has delved into as many records about her biological
family as her shovel can scrape up. She has written generational research reports
about some of them and still have many to finish. There have been so many
miracles connected to her research.
Bonnie has been the committee chair for the UGA First Families of Utah. Part of this
responsibility includes reviewing pioneer applications submitted by their fine
descendants. She has so enjoyed reading the many stories of their lives and is excited to be able to continue
on with this position.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhNjcj-MOE_QMHbDC5kgq_mNMpCNWflVUubECD9IhzBWU5VhnAAeJhW4cDbsPoeHecmhgkUWZ15EcyXDecbrLIozrn1cU-bEKzcOZ8S6JQ6HYCm5k1PMfLW2ueYVjvO67D5Mq-WjIAL7lbRSJINugt0Ik1o_S5HfxsgpjMxyIAKG-xlORhXmoNUaoaDtw" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="819" data-original-width="629" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhNjcj-MOE_QMHbDC5kgq_mNMpCNWflVUubECD9IhzBWU5VhnAAeJhW4cDbsPoeHecmhgkUWZ15EcyXDecbrLIozrn1cU-bEKzcOZ8S6JQ6HYCm5k1PMfLW2ueYVjvO67D5Mq-WjIAL7lbRSJINugt0Ik1o_S5HfxsgpjMxyIAKG-xlORhXmoNUaoaDtw=w216-h282" width="216" /></a></div><br />Michael Crowther is a strong proponent for technology-driven
genealogy. He has a double-major bachelor's degree from Brigham
Young University in Genealogy and Computer Science. He has been on
the UGA board over the Technology Committee serving also as the
Webmaster for a little more than a year. He has been an employee of
FamilySearch for three years and is currently a Software Engineer
working on tools for index improvement. On the side, he is working on
his own software projects - one to auto-generate guided genealogy
tasks and another to set and track habits. In his free time, he enjoys
running, swimming, using his 3d-printer, spending time with friends

One of her favorite photos is a picture of her mother on her way to a church picnic, then on to an afternoon of cemetery transcribing. It was taken just four days before Peggy was born! Having grown up with parents that were deeply involved in genealogy takes her love of family history to a new level. Some people are amazed that she knew people that were actually born in the 1800’s; her own grandparents. Listening to the stories from bygone years, touching the fabrics from quilts, dresses, blessing gowns, and bonnets all have added to the admiration of previous generations. Peggy is a frequent lecturer at many local societies in Ohio, as well as Family History seminars. She has presented at Brigham Young University, and ICAPGen, and taught Continuing Education classes at several community colleges and The Ohio State University. One of her proudest moments was achieving the credentials that qualified her to be an Accredited Genealogist, for it polished her research skills. She is a featured columnist in Reminisce magazine, has written several Legacy QuickGuides, and has filmed as an instructor for Ancestry Academy, and worked as a researcher for Ancestry ProGenealogists. She was recognized for her work by being award the title of Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society in 2018, as well as receiving the Laura G. Prescott Award for Exemplary Service in Genealogy. </p><p><br /></p><p><b><u>New Board Members:</u></b></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgkdSaE4Gz35RnLjt4PQc2o_P6Xmh7WcyJVD0-PNBedcOsK14YehmMFO-WFv0EVrT0dAFLMuE6frUawHJPT52MPHH3VqRJ16jV6vQ9L21V5WSAQ7fa9ZkJ7DIykPsQ81LzMLzmAkD0DaRp34iDtVxLXESs2vgR5p8HvrbHvyE1XfybUJubZBhF2ktkVvw" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="748" data-original-width="665" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgkdSaE4Gz35RnLjt4PQc2o_P6Xmh7WcyJVD0-PNBedcOsK14YehmMFO-WFv0EVrT0dAFLMuE6frUawHJPT52MPHH3VqRJ16jV6vQ9L21V5WSAQ7fa9ZkJ7DIykPsQ81LzMLzmAkD0DaRp34iDtVxLXESs2vgR5p8HvrbHvyE1XfybUJubZBhF2ktkVvw=w262-h295" width="262" /></a></div><br />Angie Holbrook Stewart's interest in genealogy
began as a child on the family room floor leafing through the giant
multi-generational ancestral books her great-grandparents
assembled. Years later, a beloved grandmother handed her an
accordion stack of files and asked for help researching her paternal
line. This request resulted in over 21 years of genealogical research,
a return to higher education, and a love of connecting families. In
April 2021, she graduated from Brigham Young University – Idaho in
University Studies with a certificate and associate degree in Family
History Research. Currently, she is in her second year at the
University of Strathclyde working on a master’s degree in
Genealogical, Paleographic & Heraldic Studies. She loves genetic

dissertation allowed her to hone academic research, analysis, and
writing skills, and she loved delving into the communities and
people of Tremonton and Bear River City, Utah through her

as a volunteer on the US/Canada floor. Her research areas of focus
are Great Britain, as well as the Midwest and New England

year, the Presidential Citation is presented to Family Tree DNA. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Family Tree DNA was founded in the year 2000 and has pioneered the field
of genetic genealogy. As leaders in the industry, they provide advanced
technology for users to gain further insight into their family history. They
were the first direct-to-consumer genetic genealogy company, taking DNA testing
for ancestry out of academia and into mainstream culture.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Family Tree DNA continues to establish standards and create new
milestones in the rapidly growing field of genetic genealogy. They are the only
company to offer all three types of genetic tests – autosomal, mitochondrial,
and Y-DNA, and they have over 11,000 group projects run by volunteers who focus
on a wide range of genealogical, geographical, and haplogroup areas of
research. Family Tree DNA believes in an informed community and in providing
genealogists with opportunities to understand DNA testing and how it can
benefit them.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The mission of UGA is to provide genealogical information, sources, and
education through personal instruction and published media on family history
topics, while promoting high standards and ethical practices. As part of
furthering its mission, UGA sponsors a special interest group called UGA DNA. Family
Tree DNA is a long-time supporter of UGA DNA, the Utah Genealogical

Distinguished Service Award is given in recognition of outstanding service to
UGA. This year UGA is pleased to bestow this award on Mike Bronner. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt;">By profession, Mike develops web
applications using cutting-edge technologies. His further interests lie in
research methodologies and business processes and strategies. In his spare time
Mike researches his own family lines, specializing in German research and
deciphering old handwritten German documents. Time permitting, he also enjoys
playing Pickleball with his local club members.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt;">Mike has served UGA for many years as a
board member, webmaster, and chair of the Technology Committee, which he helped
to create to oversee, research, and recommend technology solutions to meet
UGA’s growing needs. As chair of this committee, Mike led UGA through difficult
decisions and transitions related to electronic storage; meeting and webinar
providers; email, survey, and communication management systems; digital
collections; password distribution; event registration; and website
development. He developed branding documentation and a standard operating procedures
manual.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt;">As UGA’s website manager, Mike implemented

the Hilton Salt Lake City to accommodate growth. During Peg’s tenure, SLIG has expanded
to include SLIG Virtual and the SLIG Academy for Professionals. She helped
launch and create SLIG’s Intermediate Foundations course to help a broader
range of students prepare for institute level education. She has brought
scholarships, sponsorships, and outstanding financial leadership to SLIG that
have enabled UGA to provide world-class education in a first-class setting
while keeping costs reasonable for students. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Peg is a unique leader who is motivated by the success
of others and the success of the programs she directs as opposed to her own
personal accolades. She has been a personal mentor to many people who have gone
on to serve in many ways in the genealogical community. Her own measure of
success has never been a trophy or recognition but in quality education and the
improvement of the SLIG experience.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Peg is organized, and she plans ahead (sometimes 5
years in advance). She stays within budget and thinks of every budget detail in
advance. Peg regularly thinks outside the box and plans for any situation that
may arise. She constantly strives to find a better way to do something and has
never been afraid to take a leap. We have definitely seen this in the past
month as she switched SLIG from an in-person to a virtual event at the last
minute. This has been an enormous undertaking, but she led the change admirably,
and it’s been a successful and rewarding week. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Peg supports the creativity of her faculty which leads
to innovative—and often exclusive—courses that have helped to elevate the
entire genealogical field. Her contributions have brought growth and stability
to an already-proven and nationally recognized program. Peg’s vision and
servant leadership have enabled hundreds of participants to receive premier
genealogy education every year, raising the bar for genealogy research around
the globe. UGA is proud to honor her with the Award of Merit this year.<o:p></o:p></span></p><br /><p></p>Tristan Tolmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12956889969733559189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947370934466469773.post-90920436925593924412022-01-16T14:30:00.002-08:002022-01-16T14:30:10.082-08:00Chapter Service Award: Skye Cranor<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjeQ7H4LOSLLPd64neN39tiCFUDdwbEgaw_RbmginQN0tDnFNYDoQMGWPzjVZoUNwRxoZmJzuZelMsXCJ9_al1IaDcBV1_N1h9MSzYARgiI7IyQXtx4j_zDGmZCseQFrklHGfrLUWqU3YA437XYu9eIhv7BbLe7cesGwmRE8xUMDXPACy9yh8oxNmTT=s4096" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4096" data-original-width="2731" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjeQ7H4LOSLLPd64neN39tiCFUDdwbEgaw_RbmginQN0tDnFNYDoQMGWPzjVZoUNwRxoZmJzuZelMsXCJ9_al1IaDcBV1_N1h9MSzYARgiI7IyQXtx4j_zDGmZCseQFrklHGfrLUWqU3YA437XYu9eIhv7BbLe7cesGwmRE8xUMDXPACy9yh8oxNmTT=s320" width="213" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt;">Chapter

Utah Genealogical Association Chapter Service Award is given in recognition of
outstanding service to or for a UGA Chapter. The Chapter Service Award was
first given out in 1999. This year, the Utah Genealogical Association is
pleased to present the Chapter Service Award to Skye Cranor, president of UGA’s
South Davis Chapter.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 14pt;">Skye
has been interested in family history from an early age which led to a love of
photographs and preserving the stories that go with them. She is the unofficial
historian for her family, is a Lead Ambassador with FOREVER, and has served as
the President of the South Davis Chapter of UGA for the past several years.
During that time, she rebuilt the chapter from the ground up and skillfully
transitioned it from meeting in-person every month to meeting virtually once
Covid-19 prohibited face-to-face contact. Her leadership and guidance have
helped genealogists of all experience levels gain skills and knowledge to help
them in their quest for their ancestors. In addition to her work with the South

UGA Summit of Excellence conference. She is knowledgeable, helpful, and a joy

of genealogy and family history. Since 1988, it has traditionally been given
for publication efforts. The award is presented at the Salt Lake Institute of
Genealogy banquet held in January of each year. This year’s Silver Tray Award recipient
has published articles and books, edited one of genealogy’s premier
peer-reviewed journals, and has worked actively to develop quality genealogical
writing skills in others. The Silver Tray Award is given this year to Karen
Mauer Jones.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">Some of you have already experienced Karen in her “Writing and

from her starting next month in SLIG Academy. Multiple sessions of this course
consistently fill quickly.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">Karen Mauer Jones resides in Ithaca, New York, an editor, author,
lecturer, and professional genealogist specializing in upstate New York. She
served for seven years as editor of <i>The New York Genealogical and

Biographical Society in 2012. Besides the writing course already mentioned, she
also coordinates the course, “Researching New York: Resources and Strategies,”
and teaches in the IGHR course, “Writing and Publishing for Genealogists.” The

Joshua Taylor</b></p><p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The Utah Genealogical Association Fellow Award is given in recognition
of those living individuals whose distinguished contributions and ongoing
commitment to the field of genealogy are of national or international scope.
This may be evidenced by any combination of publications, teaching and
speaking, or leadership of major genealogical organizations over a significant
period of time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The latest recipient of the UGA Fellow Award is D. Joshua Taylor. Joshua
is well-known nationally as a researcher, speaker, author, and leader of
genealogical organizations. A native of Logan, Utah, he served in his young
adulthood on boards and committees and as an officer of the Utah Genealogical
Association. Many binders full of the history of UGA have been collected by him
(and are now in the process of being digitized). In recognition of his
knowledge and service, he was invited in 2021 to keynote the 50th Anniversary
UGA Summit of Excellence.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Since 2009, Joshua has almost annually coordinated or taught in courses
offered by the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. Just this week, he led the
SLIG course on “Advanced New England Research.” Next month, he coordinates and
teaches the SLIG Academy course called, “You’re Invited: Public Speaking from
Concept to Delivery.” Joshua has taught and presented at a myriad of other
events, including conferences of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, the
Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, and
local and regional societies too numerous to list.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Residing now in New York City, Joshua is the president and CEO of the
New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, the world’s second-oldest
genealogical organization. Previously, he worked on staff with <i>Genealogy
Roadshow</i>, FindMyPast, and the New England Historic Genealogical Society. He
is a past president of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Over the years, Joshua has written for several genealogy columns. He has
penned numerous articles for <i>UGA Crossroads</i>, the <i>Association of
Professional Genealogists Quarterly</i>, <i>American Ancestors</i>, and other
periodicals. He is the author of <i>The Keane and Sheahan Families of
Bridgeport, Connecticut</i>, a study of a family’s immigration and life in New England
after the Irish famine.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Joshua’s passion for genealogy and his impact on so many genealogists
learning and working today is indisputable. UGA is proud to honor him as a Fellow
of the Utah Genealogical Association.<o:p></o:p></span></p><br /><p></p>Tristan Tolmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12956889969733559189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947370934466469773.post-30517358812869574322021-10-31T14:53:00.000-07:002021-10-31T14:53:59.772-07:00Changes Announced in UGA Leadership<p> </p><h3 class="null" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: firebrick; font-family: tahoma, verdana, segoe, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 20px;">Changes Announced in UGA Leadership</span></span></h3><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Due to family issues, our UGA president, Kelly Summers, AG, has found the need to step down from her role as president. We as a UGA Board are deeply grateful for Kelly's leadership and tireless efforts to make UGA a world-class genealogy association. She will be sorely missed, but she is leaving UGA in a strong and vibrant position because of her efforts. Thank you Kelly! <br /><br />Thanks also to Elizabeth Miller, who has been faithfully serving as UGA's first vice president. Liz is a true workhorse and is always willing to step in and help with anything UGA needs. Although she has stepped down as first vice president, she will remain on the UGA Board (fortunately!).<br /><br />At a recent board meeting, the following leadership was voted in place: Tristan L. Tolman, AG, president; Julia A. Anderson, AG, first vice president; and Tanner B. Tolman, AG, second vice president. Welcome to these new leaders!
